A Longer Road to Recovery: Wout van Aert's Journey Back to Competition
In a surprising turn of events, Wout van Aert's recovery timeline might be significantly longer than initially anticipated. The renowned cyclist, who suffered an injury during a cyclocross race, is now facing a potential three-month hiatus from competition.
Van Aert's injury, initially described as a minor fracture, has turned out to be more complex than expected. After undergoing successful ankle surgery, medical experts have provided insights into the recovery process. Orthopedic surgeon Gilbert Versier explained that complete bone consolidation could take up to eight weeks, with a month of complete immobilization. This contradicts the earlier suggestion of a quick two-week rest before resuming training.
"Here's where it gets controversial..." Versier's assessment indicates that van Aert might need around two months to return to road training and a full three months for a complete comeback to competition. Cycling, being a sport that doesn't involve full body weight-bearing, makes the rehabilitation process unique.
And this is the part most people miss... Returning to pedalling is a gradual process, and van Aert's comeback for the Northern Classics and the Ardennes, while possible, is unlikely to happen any sooner. This means he will miss all preparatory races, a significant setback.
However, there's a glimmer of optimism. Mathieu Le Strat, the current doctor of Groupama - FDJ, offers a more positive outlook. He believes van Aert could get back on the bike sooner, possibly within a month. Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad reports that van Aert will attend the team's training camp in Spain, which is seen as a positive step, although it's unclear if he'll be training with his teammates.
Visma | Lease a Bike has remained tight-lipped about official details, with an expected update next week during the team's presentation in La Nucía. So, the question remains: Will van Aert's recovery be a smooth ride, or will it be a challenging journey back to the top? We invite you to share your thoughts and predictions in the comments below!
