Will Smith Discovers New Anaconda Species! | National Geographic's Pole to Pole Adventure (2026)

Get ready for an incredible journey as we uncover the story behind the discovery of a new species of anaconda, and the unexpected role of actor Will Smith!

The Unveiling of a Giant Snake

In a groundbreaking announcement in 2024, scientists revealed the existence of a previously unknown species of giant anaconda lurking in the depths of South America. This momentous discovery was captured by a National Geographic camera crew during an expedition in 2022, and guess who was along for the ride? None other than the charismatic Will Smith, who was filming for his upcoming documentary series, "Pole to Pole with Will Smith."

The three-minute clip above offers a glimpse into Smith's adventure, as he embarks on a boat journey with indigenous Waorani guides and venom expert Bryan Fry, searching for these elusive giants along the river banks. And their efforts paid off! They encountered a formidable female green anaconda, stretching an impressive 16 to 17 feet, described as "pure muscle."

But here's where it gets controversial... The Waorani guides had to subdue the massive snake, as anacondas, despite lacking venom, can deliver a powerful bite. With the snake secured, Fry, assisted by a hesitant Smith, collected a scale sample for analysis. Fry explained that this sample would provide insights into the accumulation of pollutants in the water, a critical aspect of understanding the anaconda's habitat.

And this is the part most people miss... The scale samples, along with others collected, played a pivotal role in the genetic analysis that led to the declaration of a new species. Meet the northern green anaconda (Eunectes akayama), a genetically distinct cousin of the southern green anaconda (Eunectes murinus). These two species are believed to have diverged an astonishing 10 million years ago! The northern green anaconda's domain encompasses Venezuela, Colombia, Suriname, French Guyana, and the northern regions of Brazil.

Smith's Amazon adventure was just the beginning. His journey took him to some of the most extreme environments on Earth. From facing his arachnophobia head-on with a giant tarantula to trekking across the frigid South Pole, exploring the Himalayas, recording a lost native language in the Pacific Islands, joining the San people on a hunt in the Kalahari desert, and even diving under the ice at the North Pole to collect scientific samples. It's an adventure like no other!

"Pole to Pole with Will Smith" is set to premiere on January 13, 2026, and will be available to stream on Disney+ the following day. Get ready for an epic ride!

So, what do you think? Are you excited to explore the world with Will Smith? Do you find the discovery of new species fascinating, or do you have a different perspective on these adventures?
