Attention, Portland residents! A crucial decision is looming over our public transit system, and it's time to speak up. TriMet, the backbone of our city's transportation, is facing a massive budget crunch, and it's proposing some controversial changes to its services.
With a staggering $300 million budget gap, TriMet is considering cutting and altering at least 35 service lines. The proposed changes include shortening the MAX Green Line and eliminating bus services in South Gresham, West Linn, and Tualatin. According to TriMet officials, these cuts are necessary to maintain efficiency and provide service where it's most needed. However, the proposed start date for these changes is earlier than expected, with Aug. 23, 2026, being the new target. And this is the part most people miss: further cuts and changes could happen in late 2026 and early 2027, potentially affecting even more routes.
TriMet's General Manager, Sam Desue Jr., emphasizes the focus on efficiency and cost savings while continuing to serve the daily commuters. But with $150 million already reduced through staff cuts and planned service increases, the question remains: how much more can be cut without compromising the very essence of public transit?
To have your say in these potential changes, TriMet is inviting public feedback through an online survey and in-person open houses. The public comment portion of TriMet Board meetings in January, February, and March will also provide an opportunity to voice your opinions. A special listening session is scheduled for March 18, where the Board will hear feedback on these proposals.
The plan will be presented to the TriMet Board of Directors in March, with a vote scheduled for April. Once approved, these changes will be incorporated into the agency's budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2026.
