A Teen's Sweet Success Story: From Odd Jobs to Frozen Yogurt Empire
In a heartwarming tale of determination and entrepreneurial spirit, a Staten Island teenager has achieved the extraordinary. John Galarza, just 19 years old, has opened a vibrant frozen yogurt, gelato, and coffee shop, all funded by his own hard-earned savings. But here's where it gets inspiring: John's journey began at a young age, working odd jobs to save every penny.
John's story starts on the beautiful shores of Staten Island, where he attended PS 6, IS 34, and St. Peter's Boys High School. Just before the recent blizzard, he unveiled his creation at South Shore Commons, attracting eager crowds despite the wintry conditions. The shop, located at 2955 Veterans Rd. W., Suite 1D, has become a hub of activity, with up to 80 customers flocking in during the evenings.
What's even more remarkable is that John funded this entire venture himself. Over six years, he diligently saved earnings from power washing, installing Christmas lights, and washing cars. And that's not all; he even obtained his real estate license, showcasing his ambition and drive. His family proudly shares that John's savings were the sole investment in this exciting project.
The shop's vibrant neon lighting and bright pink glow immediately catch your eye, a unique choice by John to stand out from the crowd. Early visitors included friends, classmates, and neighbors, all eager to try the delicious toppings, like rainbow-cookie slivers dipped in chocolate.
Froyolicious, as the shop is aptly named, offers a delightful array of options. From kosher yogurt to all-natural ingredients, and a variety of low-fat and nonfat choices, there's something for everyone. The gelato selection is equally impressive, with flavors like lemon, vanilla, and the indulgent banana nutella.
The frozen yogurt flavors are a rotation of delights, including nonfat options like cake batter, coffee cake, and peanut butter. Low-fat choices include pistachio and cookies 'n' cream, with a chocolate swirl to satisfy any sweet tooth. And for those with a penchant for the exotic, there's pom vanilla bliss and the nondairy pomegranate raspberry.
But Froyolicious isn't just about frozen treats. They also serve a range of espresso drinks, lattes, americanos, and cappuccinos, as well as cold brew for those hot summer days. The shop is open from noon to 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 10 p.m. on Sundays. A grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony are planned for March, so mark your calendars!
South Shore Commons, the mixed-use complex that houses Froyolicious, is a vibrant hub of retail, restaurants, and medical offices. Other tenants include Filoncino Bakery and Cafe, Crumbl Cookies, and the iconic Dunkin'. The complex also boasts a free-standing diner and lounge, Z-Two, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
