Team Sweden's Olympic Hockey Gauntlet: Can They Overcome Latvia & USA? (2026)

Get ready for an intense battle as Team Sweden takes on a challenging path at the Olympic Winter Games Milano Cortina 2026! The road to glory is paved with tough opponents, and Sweden is about to embark on a thrilling journey.

Seeded seventh, Team Sweden finds itself in a tricky situation. To reach the semifinals, they must overcome two formidable teams in consecutive days - first, Latvia, and then, if victorious, the mighty Team USA. But here's where it gets controversial... a win against these opponents could potentially set up a showdown with the formidable Team Canada.

Forward Filip Forsberg sums it up perfectly: "That's what the Olympics are all about." Indeed, it's a true test of a team's mettle.

On Tuesday, Sweden faces Latvia in the qualification playoffs at Santagiulia Arena. A win will propel them to the quarterfinals, where they'll face the United States on Wednesday. However, a loss to Latvia would be a devastating blow, potentially the most disappointing since the 2002 Salt Lake City Games when Sweden shockingly lost to Team Belarus in the quarterfinals.

And this is the part most people miss... Sweden has never been eliminated from an Olympic tournament with NHL players before the quarterfinals. It's a record they're determined to uphold.

Latvia, a dangerous opponent, defeated Sweden in the quarterfinals of the 2023 IIHF World Championship. Coach Sam Hallam, who was also behind the bench during that tournament, remains confident. "This is a completely different group," he asserts. "Many of these players have faced Latvia before, and we've put up decent performances."

Sweden has recent victories over Latvia, winning 7-2 in Ostrava, Czech Republic, in 2024 and 6-0 in Stockholm in 2025. But the Latvians are not to be underestimated. Goalie Arturs Silovs, who made 40 saves in Latvia's upset win at the 2023 Worlds, is a key player, along with Elvis Merzlikins of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

"Good goaltending duo," says Sweden's Filip Forsberg. "They're a defensively structured team with good chemistry. It's going to be a big challenge."

In the preliminary round, Latvia lost to Team USA and Team Denmark but defeated Team Germany, which boasts NHL stars like Leon Draisaitl and Tim Stutzle. Sweden's Rasmus Dahlin warns, "They grind. They make it hard for the other team and have skill too. It won't be easy. We've got to bring our 'A' game."

Victor Hedman, another Swedish defenseman, adds, "They're physical and play with their hearts. On paper, we're favorites, but it's the best team that wins. We've got to go out there and be the best. We know our skill can take over a game, but we can't take anything easy. We'll be ready."

Sweden's preliminary round was an odd one. As one of the three teams full of NHL players, they struggled against Team Italy, falling behind 1-0 in the first period and only pulling away in the third. Against their biggest rival, Team Finland, they lost 4-1. And against Team Slovakia, they gave up a late power-play goal that proved costly.

This led to their difficult path now. "That's just how the tournament goes," says Forsberg. "You've got to beat everyone at some point, and we start with Latvia."

Coach Hallam sees it as a test. "We've played well most of the time but stumbled in fragments. This team is loaded with talent. My job is to remind them of how good we are and go out there and do it tomorrow."

Will Team Sweden navigate this gauntlet and emerge with a medal? Only time will tell. What do you think? Is Sweden's path too challenging, or will they rise to the occasion? Share your thoughts in the comments!
