In a bold move that has captured attention across the NHL, Philip Broberg has officially inked a six-year contract worth $48 million with the St. Louis Blues. This deal, which averages out to an impressive $8 million per year, is set to commence next season—a significant commitment from the team.
At just 24 years old, this talented defenseman has already made a mark in his second season with the Blues, accumulating 14 points from two goals and 12 assists over 44 games played. Previously, he had signed a two-year contract valued at $9.16 million, averaging $4.58 million annually, on August 20, 2024, after the Edmonton Oilers chose not to match the offer sheet presented by the Blues on August 13. Had the offseason unfolded differently, Broberg could have entered restricted free agency at the end of the current season.
Blues general manager Doug Armstrong expressed enthusiasm about securing Broberg for the upcoming seasons, stating, "It's exciting to have him for this year plus six more that basically takes him right through the meat of his prime years." He continued, highlighting Broberg’s contributions amid a challenging season for the team: "He's been one of the few bright lights in a season that hasn't gone anywhere near the way we expected. He's a player on the back end I think we can build around."
Last season marked a significant achievement for Broberg, as he reached career highs in several categories—including games played (68), goals scored (eight), assists (21), total points (29), plus-minus rating (+21), and shots on goal (97). Such performance showcases his growing impact on the ice.
"He touches right now our penalty kill, our 5-on-5 play, getting incorporated a little more into the power play, which I think he will take a bigger chunk of that as time goes on," Armstrong commented. "A cornerstone player on the back end that it's nice to have in the fold. He and I had a good conversation that he's held up his end of the bargain and now it's up to the management to hold up their end of the bargain to put up a team around him that can have success."
Drafted by the Edmonton Oilers as the eighth overall pick in the first round of the 2019 NHL Draft, Broberg has accumulated 56 points—consisting of 12 goals and 44 assists—in 194 regular-season games split between the Oilers and the Blues. Additionally, he has contributed five points, including three goals and two assists, during 27 playoff appearances.
As the Blues, currently sitting at a record of 17 wins, 20 losses, and eight overtime losses, prepare for their upcoming game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Saturday at 10 p.m. ET, fans are left pondering: What does this hefty investment in Broberg mean for the franchise's future?
