Nigel Farage has boldly declared that Reform UK is no longer a one-man show, unveiling a new frontbench team that he claims will transform the party into a credible force for government. But here’s where it gets controversial: while Farage insists this move proves Reform UK’s independence from his singular leadership, he’s also made it crystal clear that dissent won’t be tolerated. It’s a fine line between building a cohesive team and maintaining iron-fisted control—and it’s already raising eyebrows.
Among the appointees are two high-profile defectors from the Conservative Party: Robert Jenrick, now in charge of the Treasury brief, and Suella Braverman, tasked with education, skills, and equalities. And this is the part most people miss: Richard Tice, Reform’s deputy leader, was widely expected to take the Treasury role but has instead been handed a combined brief of business, trade, and energy. Zia Yusuf, the party’s head of policy and the only non-parliamentarian in the group, will oversee home affairs and migration.
Farage argues this team is proof that Reform UK is no longer just his personal project. “If I was hit by a bus tomorrow, Reform has its own brand, its own identity,” he stated confidently. But when asked about potential internal disagreements over these appointments, his response was blunt: “Tough. We’re not mucking about here. We haven’t got time.” It’s a leadership style that leaves little room for debate—and that’s exactly how Farage wants it.
Here’s the controversial bit: Farage insists Jenrick and Braverman are different from the Conservatives he’s repeatedly criticized, claiming they’ve “resigned or been eased out of their positions.” But does this really absolve them of their past associations? And can Reform UK truly distance itself from the very party it’s trying to replace?
During the press conference, Farage’s domineering approach was on full display. He frequently answered questions on behalf of his colleagues, and at one point, dismissed a Financial Times reporter with a curt, “Just write some silly story.” It’s a style that underscores his unwavering control but also raises questions about the autonomy of his team.
On policy, Braverman stole the spotlight, announcing plans to abolish the equalities brief and repeal the Equality Act on her first day in government. She also criticized the “prevalence of liberal ideology” in schools, proposing a shift from targeting 50% university attendance to 50% vocational training in trades like carpentry and electrical work.
Meanwhile, Tice, a long-time critic of net zero policies, vowed to end the “madness” of clean and renewable energy, instead focusing on offshore oil, gas, and fracking. These policies are sure to spark debate, particularly among environmental advocates who argue that such a shift would be a step backward.
