Did Liam Delap make a monumental misstep by joining Chelsea? That's the burning question on many football fans' minds, and none other than Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher is leading the charge, declaring the move a "bad move" for the young striker.
It was a summer of intense speculation, but ultimately, Chelsea secured Delap's signature from Ipswich Town for a hefty £30 million. However, the dream move hasn't quite translated into consistent on-field success. Since the year began, Delap has struggled to cement a regular spot in Chelsea's starting lineup, making only four starts. Across all competitions this season, he's featured in 23 matches, but only 11 of those have been from the outset, with nine of those starts occurring in the Premier League.
Carragher, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, minced no words. He believes the leap from Ipswich to Chelsea was simply "too big" for the former Manchester City academy graduate. "Honestly, it was a bad move going to Chelsea," he stated. "I just think young players, when they're on a journey and getting better… the jump from Ipswich and Chelsea was too big, he needed somewhere in the middle." He even suggested a club like Everton as a more suitable stepping stone, where a striker could expect to play consistently, even through minor dips in form. "Somewhere like Everton. If you play centre forward for Everton and play every game and know even if you have a few bad games you’re still going to play. Whereas at Chelsea he’s never sure he’s going to play, even if he starts. Sometimes the jump is too big, you need that team in the middle."
But here's where it gets controversial... While Carragher sees a miscalculation, former England striker Emile Heskey offers a different perspective. He believes Delap was right to seize the opportunity to join a top club, understanding the immense pressure that comes with it, especially given his upbringing in the Manchester City academy. Heskey's advice for Delap? Focus on improving his hold-up play. "Liam Delap needs to concentrate on improving his hold-up play," Heskey advised. "It’s such an important asset because it affects how your teammates play with you. They want a striker who they can be confident in firing the ball into, knowing it will stick. I think Delap needs to focus on that and spend more time on it." He acknowledges that while goals and assists often steal the spotlight, overall play remains crucial for Delap's development.
Heskey is optimistic that Delap will eventually find his feet at Stamford Bridge, even if it takes until next season. "He understands the pressure that comes with playing for such a big club because he was in the Manchester City academy and that will help him. He just needs to find his feet, and that may take until next season. I think he will come good."
