Uncover the Surprising Items That Make Costco's $65 Membership Fee Worth It

Are you a Costco member? Do you ever wonder if the annual fee is truly justified? One Reddit user did, and their question sparked a debate among fellow shoppers. But here's where it gets controversial: while some items might not seem like a big deal, they could actually make the membership fee worthwhile. And this is the part most people miss...

The annual membership fee for Costco's Gold Star Membership is $65, and while it's known for bulk buying at low prices, many question its value. To find out which items make the fee worth it, Business Insider crunched the numbers. They focused on shelf-stable items typically used throughout the year and compared them to prices at traditional retailers. They even asked ChatGPT to estimate usage in a two-person household over a year.

The analysis revealed some surprising findings. For instance, pet food is a big winner. A 38-pound bag of Blue Buffalo dog food costs $65 at Costco, compared to $111 at other retailers. This means the membership fee would be canceled out in less than two purchases, earning a payback score of 713. Diapers and baby wipes also cancel out the fee with a payback score of 373, making it a major plus for parents. Even baby formula, a big purchase for parents, would counterbalance the membership after just five purchases, earning a payback score of 240.

Coffee lovers will also want to head to Costco. If a household consumes 30 pounds of coffee a year, the payback score would be 166, canceling out the membership after 18 pounds of coffee. Cheese lovers will also want to run to Costco, as a household consuming 25 pounds of cheese a year would have a payback score of 102, almost equally offsetting the membership fee. And Costco's paper products, such as toilet paper, are also a big draw, with a payback score of 67 if a household buys four large packs per year.

However, Business Insider noted that this analysis assumes no other purchases at Costco, which is unlikely. In fact, it's been reported that Costco shoppers spend money with every minute they spend in the store. From the moment someone walks into a Costco, they're set to spend about $1.75 per minute, and the average person spends about 37 minutes wandering around, bringing the total to about $64.75. So, while some items might not seem like a big deal, they could actually make the membership fee worthwhile. Now, it's your turn to weigh in. Do you agree with these findings?
