A bold tactical shift by Cristian Chivu has Inter Milan fans buzzing with anticipation and curiosity.
"A New Inter"
In a surprising move, Inter's coach Chivu unveiled a fresh approach for the Coppa Italia semi-final against Como, a strategy he admits is unprecedented for the team.
"It's a first for us," Chivu revealed, "we had to adapt and make the most of our resources."
Despite Inter's dominance in Serie A, their cup campaigns have been less successful. Chivu's tactical adjustments for the Como match were a response to this challenge.
The Challenge of Cup Competitions
Inter's recent cup form has been a cause for concern. They were eliminated from the Champions League, losing both legs against Bodo/Glimt, and today's 0-0 draw against Como in the Coppa Italia semi-final was a struggle.
"It all comes down to the second leg at San Siro," Chivu said, leaving fans with a glimmer of hope.
Chivu's Tactical Masterstroke
Chivu's transformation of Inter's strategy against Como was a bold move. He confessed to dealing with several issues, which led to some forced changes.
"I played with a unique midfield setup, a pair of creative midfielders supporting the striker, a first for me," Chivu explained.
He also changed their defensive approach, opting for a man-to-man marking strategy, but admitted they were slow to react to Como's left-back.
"Como's strikers were a unique challenge, dropping deeper and causing us problems. They're masters of possession, drawing us out and attacking the spaces we leave."
Despite these challenges, Chivu praised his team's understanding and adaptability.
A Unique Squad Setup
With key strikers Lautaro Martinez and Ange-Yoan Bonny out, and Marcus Thuram not fully fit, Chivu opted for a unique system, pushing Andy Diouf into a more advanced role to support Francesco Pio Esposito.
"We had to make do with what we had, and the lads recognized the difficulty. It wasn't a typical Inter performance, but they gave their all."
The Derby Dilemma
The question on everyone's mind: will Inter replicate this approach for the Derby against Milan in Serie A on Sunday, or will they revert to their usual 3-5-2 formation?
"Both teams were cautious tonight, waiting to see what the other would do. It wasn't an entertaining match as both sides struggled to find space. We tried a new build-up with two playmakers, a different midfield dynamic. We'll see what's possible for the Derby."
A Light-Hearted Moment
Chivu, joined by former teammates Christian Panucci and Andrea Ranocchia, joked about their studio analysis.
"I prefer it when they insult me," Chivu smiled, referring to the recent criticism he's faced.
As the conversation continued, the trio delved deeper into the tactical nuances of Inter's performance, leaving fans with much to ponder ahead of the Derby.
