India's coal production is on a rollercoaster! Despite a recent surge, the overall picture reveals a complex energy landscape. Let's dive in.
In December, India's coal output experienced a 3.6% jump, reaching 101.45 million tons, according to The Hindu. This impressive figure even surpassed the monthly target of 87.06 million tons. But here's where it gets interesting...
Over the first three quarters of the current fiscal year (April to March), coal production is actually down by 0.64%, totaling 721.65 million tons. The monsoon season earlier in the year played a role in these disruptions.
Controversially, coal supplies to the power generation industry decreased by 7% in December, even though power generation from coal and gas increased by 4.42%. This happened because India saw a seasonal record power consumption in December. Peak demand nearly matched summer levels, driven by colder weather and increased use of heating appliances. Peak demand surged to 241 gigawatts, a 7.5% increase compared to December 2024, getting close to the 243 GW peak demand seen during the summer.
Coal continues to be a crucial part of India's electricity mix, accounting for about 60% of total power output. In December, coal and gas generation together made up 74% of the country's energy mix during peak demand.
And this is the part most people miss... Despite efforts to decarbonize, coal-fired power generation and capacity installations are still rising. Bloomberg reported that India's government is considering postponing the suspension of new coal generation capacity from 2035 to 2047.
