The FBI has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the passing of Jim Irsay, the former owner of the Indianapolis Colts, as confirmed by team officials on Friday.
Irsay's death in May was initially reported by the team, which stated he had "peacefully passed away in his sleep." However, a report from The Washington Post in late August revealed that Irsay had been struggling with a long-standing addiction to painkillers and had reportedly overdosed three times in the five years leading up to his death.
In their statement, the Colts acknowledged awareness of the investigation, but clarified that they have not yet been contacted by the FBI nor received any subpoenas related to the case.
NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy mentioned that the league would refrain from commenting on this specific matter.
According to information reviewed by The Post, a federal grand jury subpoena has been issued, suggesting that the FBI is seeking detailed records and information regarding Irsay’s death, his use of both illegal and prescription substances, and his connection to Dr. Harry Haroutunian, an addiction specialist based in California. This subpoena was reportedly filed by the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California earlier this month.
The Associated Press reached out to Dr. Haroutunian for comment, as it was reported that he had prescribed pain medication and ketamine to Irsay in the months leading up to his death in May 2025.
In August, The Post also reported that Irsay had been administered ketamine—commonly known as a general anesthetic—during his final days, and that law enforcement was called to the hotel room in Beverly Hills, California, where he met his end. It was noted that Haroutunian was present at the hotel, overseeing Irsay's treatment, and he is also the one who signed the death certificate.
While the official cause of death was recorded as "cardiac arrest due to pneumonia and heart complications," no autopsy was conducted, and the Beverly Hills police closed their investigation shortly after.
In response to these revelations, Irsay’s three daughters—Carlie Irsay-Gordon, Casey Foyt, and Kalen Jackson—who now manage the Colts, released a statement acknowledging that their father "never claimed to be perfect". They highlighted how he used his platform to help diminish the stigma around addiction and mental health issues, advocating for others facing similar challenges.
