Fallout Season 2’s Viewership Plummets—But Is It Really a Cause for Alarm?
The latest Nielsen ratings are in, and they’re painting a dramatic picture for Fallout fans: Season 2’s viewership numbers have taken a nosedive compared to its predecessor. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Fallout Season 2 logged 794 million viewing minutes on Prime Video during the week of December 15-21, which includes its debut on December 16. In contrast, Season 1 racked up a staggering 2.9 billion minutes during its opening week in April 2024. That’s a 72% decline, but before you sound the alarms, let’s dig into why this happened.
And this is the part most people miss: The release strategies for both seasons were vastly different. Season 1 dropped all at once in a binge-friendly format, allowing viewers to devour the entire series in one go. Season 2, however, is being released weekly—and to add to that, only one episode premiered on December 16, compared to the two or three episodes Prime Video typically releases for other shows. Given this, the lower numbers for Season 2 aren’t just expected—they’re practically guaranteed.
Nielsen’s data, which combines viewership across multiple seasons, reveals that 54% of Fallout’s streaming minutes during that week (about 429 million) were for Season 2, while the rest came from viewers revisiting Season 1. This makes perfect sense, considering the staggered release schedule.
As of now, Season 2 has aired five episodes, with three more set to drop each Wednesday until its finale on February 4.
