Chris Pratt's 'Mercy' Shakes Up the Box Office, But at What Cost?
In a surprising turn of events, Chris Pratt's sci-fi thriller 'Mercy' has dethroned the mighty 'Avatar: Fire and Ash' from its five-weekend reign at the top of the box office charts. But here's where it gets controversial: this victory comes amidst a massive winter storm that has blanketed much of the US, causing theater closures and a significant drop in overall weekend revenue.
Despite the challenging conditions, 'Mercy' managed to collect an impressive $11.2 million in its North American debut. However, the film's reception has been mixed, with moviegoers and critics giving it a lukewarm response. With a 'B-' grade on CinemaScore and a dismal 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the future of 'Mercy' at the box office remains uncertain.
'Mercy', directed by Timur Bekmambetov, tells the story of a detective (Pratt) on trial for the alleged murder of his wife, with an advanced AI judge (Rebecca Ferguson) deciding his fate. The film's soft reception hasn't deterred Amazon MGM, who are looking to make a big comeback in 2026 after a quiet 2025. They have a slate of upcoming releases, including 'Project Hail Mary' starring Ryan Gosling, 'Masters of the Universe', and 'Verity', an adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel.
But the box office landscape is ever-changing, and 'Avatar 3' provides a perfect example. After six weekends, 'Fire and Ash' has earned an impressive $378 million in North America and $1.378 billion globally. Yet, it hasn't come close to matching the box office dominance of its predecessors, 'Avatar' and 'Avatar: The Way of Water'.
And this is the part most people miss: animated films continue to dominate. Disney's 'Zootopia 2' has remained a box office powerhouse, raking in $401 million domestically and $1.744 billion globally. It has dethroned 'Inside Out 2' as the highest-grossing animated Hollywood film of all time.
Another new release, 'Return to Silent Hill', struggled to find an audience, debuting at No. 7 with $3.2 million. Iconic Events, the distributor, remains optimistic, citing the film's low investment and the dedicated fan base of the video game series.
The weather certainly played a role in the box office performance this weekend, as David A. Gross, a movie consultant, points out. He believes the industry will see some of the missed demand return if the weather improves.
Lastly, the Oscar contenders are getting a boost. A24's 'Marty Supreme', with 9 nominations, added $3.5 million over the weekend, while Chloe Zhao's 'Hamnet', with 13 Academy Award nods, generated $2 million in its first weekend of nationwide release.
