BRICS Currency Revolution? India Proposes Linking Digital Currencies! (2026)

A bold move is afoot in the world of international finance, and it's time to dive into the intriguing proposal from India's central bank. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has suggested a groundbreaking idea: linking digital currencies of BRICS nations to simplify trade and potentially reduce reliance on the US dollar.

But here's where it gets controversial... RBI's proposal, as reported by Reuters, aims to tackle the complexities of cross-border trade and payments, especially in the tourism sector. This initiative could be a game-changer, but it's not without its critics.

The upcoming BRICS summit, hosted by India this year, brings together ten countries, including the original five: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. These nations are taking steps towards implementing their own digital currency projects, with China leading the way in terms of progress with its e-CNY.

And this is the part most people miss... The potential impact on the US dollar and the American administration's response. Journalists have noted that bypassing the dollar might not sit well with the US, which has already issued warnings against such attempts. President Donald Trump previously labeled the BRICS alliance as "anti-American," highlighting the potential for tension.

The RBI's proposal is rooted in a declaration from the 2025 BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing the need for compatible payment systems to boost trade efficiency. Russia's Ministry of Finance has also announced the development of the BRICS Bridge platform for settlements in national currencies, including digital ones.

But let's focus on China's progress. According to the Atlantic Council, digital yuan transactions have skyrocketed, exceeding $2.3 trillion since the pilot's launch in 2023. That's an increase of over 800%!

Beijing's strategy for expanding the digital yuan's domestic use is a clever mix of interest income and stablecoin-like functionality, while maintaining sovereignty and regulation. At the wholesale level, China continues to develop the mBridge platform project, a solution for cross-border CBDC payments. Initially launched by the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) Innovation Hub, this project has seen remarkable growth.

During its initial experiments, mBridge processed a modest 164 transactions totaling about $22 million. But in October 2024, things took a turn. BIS exited the project, and activity on the platform surged. Under the guidance of partner central banks, mBridge conducted over 4,000 cross-border transactions worth a whopping ~$55.49 billion. That's a growth of more than 2,500 times compared to 2022!

The digital yuan dominates, accounting for 95.3% of the total transaction volume. Experts at the Atlantic Council conclude that while the mBridge project may not directly challenge the dollar's dominance, it could gradually weaken it in specific areas and use cases.

China and its partners are not seeking to replace the American currency directly. Instead, they're building parallel settlement systems, reducing reliance on existing ones. This approach is a subtle yet powerful strategy.

The question remains: Will the US lose the digital currency race to China? Coinbase and SkyBridge Capital founder Anthony Scaramucci have expressed concerns about strict stablecoin regulations potentially undermining the US's position.

So, what do you think? Is this a bold step towards a more diverse and decentralized global financial system, or is it a risky move that could backfire? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
