The Statistics Unveiled: From January to November 2025, 3.3 million tourists opted for non-market accommodations, a term that encompasses homes owned by visitors or stays with friends and family. This figure represents a significant 10.4% jump compared to the same period in 2024.

The Fake Friends and Family Phenomenon: The hotel industry and Habtur, the holiday rentals association, argue that many of these accommodations are marketed in tourists' home countries as stays with friends and family, making them hard to detect. Seeking Solutions: The Balearic Government is requesting Spain's interior ministry to provide more precise data on tourist arrivals and stays, believing it could reveal the extent of illegal accommodations. The police are thought to have more accurate information than the National Statistics Institute's monthly reports.
