A bold move by Andhra Pradesh's Chief Minister has sparked controversy and left many questioning the future of housing policies. Naidu's decision to reverse land allocations for the poor in Amaravati has sent shockwaves through the state.
In a recent policy shift, N Chandrababu Naidu instructed officials to undo the allocation of house sites under the R-5 zone, a move made during the previous YSRCP government's tenure. This decision, taken at the APCRDA meeting, aims to reclaim lands transferred for housing purposes, citing inconsistencies with the Amaravati Master Plan and potential disruptions to urban development.
During the previous administration led by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, approximately 50,000 beneficiaries from Vijayawada and Guntur districts were promised house sites in Amaravati's R-5 zone under the "Housing for All" initiative. Around 900 acres of APCRDA land were transferred to the Revenue Department for this scheme.
However, APCRDA officials have raised concerns, stating that these allocations deviated from the planned development strategy. In response, Naidu has directed that eligible beneficiaries be provided with house sites in their local areas, adhering to the state's policy. District collectors have also been instructed to initiate land pooling or acquisition processes as required.
Additionally, it was revealed that the Revenue Department had not made payments due to APCRDA for the transferred lands. As a result, final notices will be issued, and steps taken to restore control of these lands to APCRDA. The R-5 zone will be reverted to its pre-2023 state.
This decision represents a significant reversal of land policies and is expected to have wide-ranging impacts. It raises questions about the balance between housing needs and urban planning, and the potential political fallout is a topic of much speculation.
And this is where it gets interesting... What do you think? Is this a necessary step to maintain a well-planned city, or does it undermine efforts to provide housing for all? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
